Solution
Memory at 1333 MHz and memory at 1600 MHz will work fine with the Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard and with the i7-4790K CPU automatically.

There's not much difference in performance between 1333 and 1600 MHz memory, maybe around 5% improvement when using 1600 memory.

1866 MHz memory has about 10% performance gain over 1333 memory.

2133 MHz memory gains about 12% over 1333 memory.

2400 MHz memory gains about 13% over 1333 memory.

If wanting to use higher frequency memory (higher than 1600), then manual override in BIOS is required in order to run the higher frequency memory.
