In light of the gtx 970 actuly having only 3.3 - 3.5 gb vram usable what should we buy

Solution
At that price and resolution, the 970 has no match. The 3.5 gb bug would only be apparent at 4k res or multi - monitor setups at peak situations. At 1080p, it will be absolutely fine.
It's a tough choice, especially for gaming at high resolutions like 4K or more. The GTX 970 was priced so awesomely, but I would wait and see what more response Nvidia gives this week. I have a feeling that they are going to simply advertise it as a 3.5GB card though.

Since the GTX 980 is overpriced, it looks like the R9 290 and 290x are still going to be the cards to get for super high resolutions. Even the R9 295 is looking good, as I saw some under $700 this weekend.

But if you are only going to play at 1080p, there isn't much reason to get more than a GTX 960 or R9 280.

Yeah, newegg.com has the XFX one listed at $690 all week.

Not going to lie, it's a damn steal at that price if somebody is actually looking to buy high end cards for 4k right now.

Even with 500MB less VRAM, the GTX 970 is still a beast of a card for the price. However, if you don't mind higher power consumption and greater heat output, the R9 290X is the way to go. However, AMD is going to be releasing their new GPU architecture sometime within the next few months, so the 290X will soon be a last generation card. And the next gen equivalent to the 290X will almost certainly competing with the GTX 980, and will be priced accordingly. So don't expect to be buying an R9 390X or whatever it is they decide to call their flagship card for the same price as the 290X is sitting at right now.

If you're a 1080p gamer and want a current gen product that can max out any game and have power to spare, then the GTX 970 is still the best card out there, hands down. But if you don't mind having an older card as long as it gets the job done, the R9 290X is probably the what you should be looking at.
