Back when I had Windows 7, I enjoyed Microsoft Security Essentials. It was free, and many people/sites recommended it. After installing Windows 8.1 on my new PC today, I went through my usual download list after installing a new OS. To my surprise, Windows told me I didn't need MSE when I tried to install it and said there was Windows Defender, which does pretty much the same thing.
So, is that true? Should I get some other type of anti-virus or anti-malware software? I generally try to be safe on the net--I don't use torrents or download suspicious stuff, I don't put important personal info out where everybody can see it, I don't install unknown crap on my PC, etc. But obviously, you can never be too careful.
What are your thoughts? Do I need any extra protection?
