A wireless switch is just a AP. That is its complete function in life to provide layer 2 connection between wireless devices.

Like most electronic things today it will be cheaper to buy it than to try to build it yourself. Pretty much there are custom processors that handle almost all the function. Many people call these the wireless radios but they are actually chips that have the radio function as well as the vast majority of the communication protocols in them also.

One of the more popular ones is Broadcom BCM4706. This is used in many of the common 802.11ac routers/AP.

Now could you get simpler chips where the radio and control section are separate... I suppose but the reason that almost every router manufacture uses the...

Now could you get simpler chips where the radio and control section are separate... I suppose but the reason that almost every router manufacture uses the chips from basically 3 vendors it is cheaper for even them to just buy a box that does what they want rather than invent it themselves. Wireless is particular is highly regulated by governments and the costs to certify your radios conform to the laws is expensive so few companies are will to incur that expense.

Now there are some other forms of wireless networks but these too pretty much depend on custom chips that it is cheaper to let some large company built into a end device for you.

The days of build your own stuff are long gone. Surface mount chips and multiple layer circuit boards have made it impossible for a hobbyist to even think to build them.
