I have just bought a Cybertron PC with windows 8.1 and a Geforce graphics card preinstalled. For the past couple days I have been updating and installing software. Everything was going good for a day but not anymore. When I restart Windows I come to the login screen and login with no problem but after login the screen is black with a functional cursor. I can get to task manager and it will appear on the black screen. I have done quite a bit of simple troubleshooting including an earlier restore point. I believe it has something to do with the graphics driver update but I may be wrong. But to top it off if I leave the computer running for approximately 45 minutes the screen appears and works fine. I would run it this way but it's a new computer and would like to know what is causing this and find a fix. Any ideas out there?

I have the exact same problem! Every time my computer restarts, it always get the black screen, don't know why, but for now i also think it might be the graphic driver update....

Anyways, I DO know a way to get back to the functional desktop screen, but I dont know if it will work for you or not...
This is the way i did it
1) Open Task Manager, then scroll down to 'Windows Explorer'. Right click it, and then click 'end task'. After that, hit 'File', then run a new task. Type in 'explorer.exe' and then click run. That should work.

However, I have to do this every time i restart my computer and it is annoying :p

I was going to try that actually thinking Explorer wasn't loading correctly. Looking for a long term solution though.

Ok then.
I do know some other ways, and I THINK they are long term solutions.

First in opening up CMD with Administrator, and then typing in 'sfc \scannow' if it gets any errors, then I think it would fix it for you...

Another is opening up regedit, and going to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Make sure that the 'shell' value is 'explorer.exe
If it isnt, then change it to that. But if it is...then you are in the same position I am in :p
