Hey all,
So i am having troubles with an old hdd. i just hooked it to my computer as a slave and as master to try to get some stuff off it. but here is my problem. so when i run it as either slave or master the computer cant read it .so when i run the diagnostics on it, it says: fail return code 5 now i have been looking around about this problem and others have said the drive is dead. The drive starts up and i can hear it trying to load and i can see it in the bios so what do you all think. Is it dead or is it recoverable?

Thanks!

Hey there, wanger212!

I'd suggest to run some more diagnostic utilities on the drive, see if there is a tool that will let you test it.

I'd also check if the drive is listed in Disk Management and what's the status of the volume there.
However, it sounds like it's damaged and I'm not sure you will be able to recover your files but I guess it won't hurt to give it a try.
Here's a thread that can give you some suggestions for data recovery tools:

Hope I was helpful! Good luck! :)
