Sometimes when I play my GPU usage suddenly drops which in turn causes my fps to lower. I'm using MSI Afterburner to view whats going on and i see no abnormal temperatures, fan speeds or anything else out of place. Do you guys have any idea whats going on?

(and no its not a CPU bottleneck or lack of RAM)

Depends how much you wanna spend I suppose.
Virtually any aftermarket CPU cooler will give you better cooling and less noise than any stock cooler.

You really dont have to spend a fortune for adequate cooling.
Any of these will shame the stock cooler.
I would suggest the TX3 for bargain cooling, and H60 for easiest and best results for your...

Is this related to just one or two games? Could be buggy games, but also maybe try changing the games profile (in Nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings) power management mode > set to prefer max performance.
See if that sorts it out.

Lesh is refering to Nvidias recent statement regarding 970 memory controller performance, google it for a read.
Use Afterburner and monitor your VRAM see if this problem occurs when your vram reaches/passes (i think) 3.5gb.

■ Games that can lag: unturned, far cry 4 and wolfenstien the new order. games that don't lag: titanfall, any indie game like the binding of isaac, evolve(beta) bioshock infinite
I'll keep an eye if it does lag past 3.5 though

No I was playing a game my cram usage was about 800ish and i still got lag spikes when the lag spikes did happen all that got lowered was gpu usage and power. I did just notice i only have a pci 2.0 thought could that be the problem?

AMD fx 8350 stock fan i did some research and i learned that this stock fan isn't that good im going to but a much better one (and hopefully one quieter)
I also noticed when my cpu goes near 70c it slows down to cool(which i expect).

if you have any recommendations for any easy to install fans and heat sinks please tell me

I'm having the same issue with my GTX 970s. I notice every time it happens my whole screen freezes for a fraction of a second. The only change I'm seeing every time it happens is a sudden drop in GPU usage.
My CPU is staying very cool, to the point where my CPU fan is just idling. It's also liquid cooled so I'm fairly certain the CPU isn't the issue.
I've got a 1500w PSU so it shouldn't be a voltage issue either.
Could it be an issue with games that don't support/utilize SLI properly?
