The above ^ should be \\ipaddress\c$ not %.

Some sharing does not like to work if you do not have a password set, if you don't want to have the main account with a password, what I did was setup an account with no real rights just for sharing logon, then I use that when prompted.

If everything is connected from that main router as a hub, all the devices will be on the same network so you won't have any isses with connecting anything on the switch.
As long as both the desktop and laptop are ultimately connected to the same router, whether it's via the hub or not, you can transfer files between the two.

What you need to do is first establish the IP address of the device you want to connect to. If you're connecting from the laptop, then you need the IP address of the desktop. Once you know what the IP address is, enter this command into a 'Run' or 'Start Search' window:

\\ipaddress\c%

You'll then be prompted for a username and password, which needs to be an administrator account on the remote device. Assuming that you connect from the laptop, the administrator account will be from the desktop. You'll also have to prefix the username with the IP address, so the actual username will look like ipaddress\username.
