Hi,
I had a seagate 500Gb 7200.12 that ran my OS, suddenly the windows failed to start and the hard drive wasn't recognized, as I didn't have all backed up I want to try and save my data.

I tried connecting my HD to an external USB case (and also to another PC), the windows recognize it but when I starts coping my data it is frozen and the windows stops recognize it.

I also tried running seatools on the HD but it didn't recognize it and after a few attempt when it did recognize my HD, it says that it can't fix the HD.

I really prefer not sending it for a professional recovery as I don't have the money for it :).

Any help / suggestion will be very appreciated.

Thanks, Joe.

Thanks digitaldoc, I did try connecting it to a couple of PC - same results, sometimes it is been recognized but when I'm trying to explore it or copy data it get stuck (I even succeeded to copy small folders), I didn't try CystalDisk yet (I will do that this weekend when I will be at home).

Thanks, Joe.

Hi there joe1joe,

You should start with examining the S.M.A.R.T data as digitaldoc already suggested.
Apart from that, have you tried recovering the data with some kind of data recovery software? If not, you can try that. Keep in mind that you should save the data on another drive(if you manage to recover any).

Thanks D_Know_WD, I will try it but I'm afraid my HD is damaged so trying to recovering it will have the same result as trying to copy it (i.e. stuck after a while).
Will give it a shot in the weekend and update you with the results.
Thanks,
Joe

Finally I got to my hard drive,
Now it even not spinning there is a low sound in it (so it getting electricity) but nothing else,
The PCB looks fine (no burned parts), Is there any test I should run on my PCB?

Please advice.
Thanks,
Joe.

I thought so .... ): ,
Before recycling it I found a similar HD and I tried to switch PCBs, the hard drive is spinning but doing some noises of knocking and then stopping.

Eventually I managed to copy all of my data!!!!!!:bounce:

Before throwing it away I decided to try one more option - ordering a board replacement and clone my old board to it (I thought it worth risking 55$).

I got it today and it worked, my hard disk is working (not 100% but working) and I succeed to copy all of my data.
