It's been 10yrs since I bought my last DVD/CD reader/burner. After a good bluray option.

As above.

I was putting together my new PC the other day and went to plug in my old LG DVD/CD reader/writer/re-writer. But it does not have a sata connector, only IDE, my new motherboard does not have an IDE slot. Soooo, I need to buy a new reader/writer.

I may as well get a bluray/dvd/cd reader/writer/re-writer. As I have been out of the loop with this sort of thing, are there any manufacturers I should steer clear from? Is there any real difference between any of them.

A quick look on a couple of stores showed me LG, Plextor and Pioneer are still the main players. Things that I remember from the past were to watch out for region locked units, units that only play certain coded media, and look for companies that update their firmware to keep up to date with new standards.

I see some come OEM with no software, and some come with software. Will I need to buy software to do something like make a copy of a bluray that I own, so I can keep the original in it's box up on a shelf so grubby little goblins dont get chocolate and scratches all over it?

Reviews are ok, but only give you an initial out of the box overview. I'm after more of an informed longer term view like that of SR-71 Blackbird. As he has not had issues with Plextors, unless someone else chips in then I will get a Plextor.
