I set my FX-8320 to overclock to 4.2ghz and i run prime95 and the clock speed cycles from 4.2 to 1.4 repeatedly. voltage is at 1.45v. when it changes to 1.4 the voltage drops to .95v and the temps drop 10C then rise back up to 70C when it changes back to 4.2ghz and 1.45v. Whats the deal here?

Solution
As i mentioned yesterday in a long post the ASRock 970 pro3 r2 doesn't support overclocking on 8 core chips. It barely supports the 8320 at default. So drop down voltage to stock IMMEDIATELY before the motherboard starts bursting into flames.

In case you have any doubts i've tested that exact motherboard with the 8320. The 4+1 power phase (with no radiator i might add) simply can't handle the power draw of an 8 core. The 8350 can't even work at stock frequency but you can force the 8320 to work at stock by tinkering a bit with the settings, maybe even reducing the voltage a bit. ANY overclocking on an 8 core is out of the question on that board. Its a budget board for 6core cpus and thats its limit.

Need motherboard make and model but i can tell you right now:

Too high temperature - as said 72C is a throttle point

Other possible reasons for throttle:
Overheating motherboard VRM
Incorrect BIOS power settings

70C is the max it hits and then it drops down. Cool n' Quiet is turned off. Ill try turning the voltage down. i have a ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard

oh man that sucks... good thing they advertised it as "Supports 8-Core CPU"

What board would you recomend thats fairly cheap?

There is no cheap board for the AMD 8 core chips - they draw a lot of power
I do have some budget options that are decently priced tho:
Gigabyte
GA-990FXA-UD5 - for deep pockets
GA-990FXA-UD3
GA-990XA-UD3
GA-970A-UD3

Asrock
990FX Extreme4
Fatality 990FX - for deep pockets

ASUS
M5A97 EVO/PRO
M5A99X EVO (R2.0)
M5A99FX PRO R2.0

Edit: I removed the Asrock 990FX Extreme3 as it might not overclock as high as you want. It has a quality 4+1 power phase but its still 4+1

Alright well thanks for the help! I suppose ill have to go drop $80 on the GA-970A-UD3P... Maybe later though cuz this rig is powerful enough for now.
