Hey all, I've run into a problem tonight.

I use my laptop as a wireless adapter for my desktop. My router is downstairs and my laptop is connected to the wifi which shares the connection with the desktop via Ethernet cable.

This setup is kind of annoying so I bought a powerline adapter kit to try to just connect directly to the router from my desktop. Sadly, it didn't work (works in all rooms of my house except the one I need it in, was testing with the laptop). So back to the drawing board, except now when trying to revert back to my old setup, I can't connect to the Internet on my desktop.

I run Windows 7.

My motherboard is an ASRock 990FX Extreme4.

I tried disabling/enabling the local area connection on my desktop as well as my laptop, and also the wifi on my laptop.

I have reset my modem and router a couple of times, but no luck.

I have verified "obtain IPv6 address automatically", as well as IPv4.

I have tried ipconfig release and renew.

I have made sure Sharing is on the laptop.

I have restarted my computer and laptop, and have shut down my desktop and unplugged it for several minutes. Still nothing.

When diagnosing, after suggesting I restart my router or modem, it gives me the message "local area connection doesnt have a valid IP configuration".

The laptop has no problems, it is connected to the Internet and will also connect to my phone when I use it as a hotspot.

Besides the failed power line adapter attempts, I also installed an audio card earlier tonight. Basically since I have installed the audio card I haven't been able to get Internet on my desktop, though this may just be a coincidence and is more likely related to the powerline testing.

I also had to move my graphics card to a different PCI-E 16 slot to make room for the audio card. Neither of these last changes should have had anything to do with this but included them anyway because I could be wrong.

Device manager shows all clear.

Mousing over the Internet connectivity icon in the bottom right says "unidentified network no internet access". It's a picture of the Ethernet connection with a yellow triangle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, really in a jam here not being able to connect to Internet on my main computer. Thanks!

If the desktop is connected to the laptop with a cable, and the laptop is connected to the router via WiFi, then why not just buy a WiFi adapter for the desktop? Ultimately, with your current set up, the desktop is using a WiFi connection to access the Internet, so you're no worse off buying a WiFi adapter.

Correct, I actually had an earlier thread where I was looking for networking alternatives. A wireless adapter is probably my next move, but wanted to powerline adapters first. Like I said, unfortunately it works in every room of the house except the one where my desktop is located. My conflict is wanting to use the Ethernet port on my motherboard so I don't have to install a networking card (possibly not enough room and also I have had bad experience with networking cards in the past, I'm on the other side of my house from the router and little antennaes squeezed between the back of my computer and the wall it sits in front of haven't done a great job in signal strength), but also something that is easy to switch networks on from my desktop (I switch to my phone's hotspot sometimes).

But I digress...

I need to resolve the issue with my current setup (using laptop as wireless adapter) ASAP without shopping for alternatives, if possible. It was working well before just trying to get back to that...
