Is CS:GO using my cpu's integrated graphics chip? Why does CS:GO run so bad? - R9 280X

Hey everyone, I'm stuck with this problem that's been seriously bugging me and I want it fixed asap so I can get back to CS:GO. I built my pc the other day and it's been great. System specs are:

MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr
Intel Pentium G3258 (OC to 4.4Ghz)
Asus Sabertooth Mark 2
EVGA supernova 750W G2
500GB Seagate Barracuda
1TB WD Blue, laptop drive
NZXT H440
TP Link 300Mbps wifi adapter

If you believe that the cpu is a bottleneck then you're wrong. Even when not overclocked it still runs like a charm. Search it up some comparison videos against the i7 4790k, virtually the same when it comes to gaming. I have updated all my drivers, including BIOS and GPU display, catalyst, sound etc. Still the same problem. I can run every other game just fine (Battlefield on ultra settings at 150% supersampling at 60-70fps) and even rendering proves no problem with this cpu inside. And so I have to ask the community, what am I doing wrong? When I launch CS:GO it's like it uses my pentium's integrated graphics. Something I have noticed though, is that as soon as I die it goes from the average 40-50 fps all the way to about 300fps for a second or two. Is it like, my gpu's clock speed just goes down automatically when I play or is it just running on my cpu's graphics chip? I have checked temps when on CS:GO and it get's to 60'c max but never beyond that. My idle temps are usually 30-40'c.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Man that sucks. Was hoping that would be it... I have one last Hail Mary .... found this on reddit.

Hey all,

The other day I posted a thread asking for advice on how to solve FPS lag and stuttering that results from unstable in-game FPS levels. I tried EVERYTHING I could find online: unparking cores, changing my Windows power settings, clicking through each and every device attached to my computer for Windows to check for updated drivers, setting launch options to -high and -thread 4. Some certainly helped a little bit, but none of these 'fixes' solved the problem.

EXCEPT for the...
I would first download gpuz, and run it while gaming. See if it is showing up your 280x like it should, and that it's your 280x that is being stressed under load.

That being said, I would also check your bios settings and make sure it's explicitly set to use pci-e for graphics, and that lucid virtu bios settings are disabled. Lucid virtu is a program that attempts to use your integrated alongside your discrete to give you graphic performance improvements, it also requires software installed. You want this off unless you are going to install the software and use it, last time i tried it was buggy as hell.

I had a look on msi afterburner and it was constantly at the same clock speed. Yep, just came back from playing a round of arms race. At 100% load, I still get 30-40 fps max at 50 but only rarely. Clock speed stays consistent. Let me try out the bios thing though, where do you think I would find it?

Read this on here a while ago.....

Go to
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\resource\flash
(the flash folder from where you have your cs;go installed) and from that folder, select and delete BACKGROUND file.

I searched every single tab on the motherboard settings. Even went into the depths of the advanced settings! I found nothing that said lucid virtu nor anything about integrated graphics. And yes, it does show it as the r9 280x on both gpuz and msi afterburner. Any other ideas?

You should under resources.... everyone else seems to... perhaps its time to uninstall and re install.... ( if you haven't already ). IN reality you should be getting around 120 fps ( or more).... and you're right the CPU you have is fine.

EXCEPT for the last piece of advice I was able to dig up today. This will be helpful for anybody experiencing FPS lag/stuttering, and doubly so to those who only experience it when gun shots pop off, grenades explode, when you're running around the map, etc.

If your sound system is managed by Realtek, you will not receive automatic driver updates, and the Windows driver update manager in 'Device Manager' isn't able to locate updated RealTek drivers

When I read up on out-dated driver software causing FPS instability and stuttering in CS:GO, I found out that my drivers were from 2012! And I bought my computer last summer. The older drivers aren't properly optimized (obviously), and they hog up a significantly larger chunk of background processing demands than I (and maybe you) realized.

How to check if your RealTek Drivers need updating (Note: I'm writing this from a Windows 8 perspective)

Right click on the sound icon on the bottom right-hand toolbar on your screen. Should be right next to the time, and some other random icons

Click playback devices

Locate 'speakers' and double click it

First, ensure that when the ensuing dialogue box opens, that your speakers are being managed by RealTek (it'll say so near the top of the box under 'controller information'

Click properties, then driver. If your drivers aren't from May 15, 2014, running version 6.0.1.7246 then your drivers are out of date

How to update your drivers

go to http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

Click "High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)"

Locate the corresponding driver for your operating system and its bit integer (ie you need to know if your OS is running on 32-bit or 64-bit, or else the driver won't work as intended). Once downloaded, it will restart your computer, then install upon the reboot, and restart your computer for a final time.

Quick note: When this is finished, again right click the sound icon, click playback devices and double click speakers

Click the 'enhancements' tab, then check the 'disable all enhancements' feature. You're not missing out on anything. If you really think you are, then just disable it before you boot CS

LAST STEP: click the 'advanced' tab, and reduce your audio quality to 16 bit 48000Hz (DVD Quality). Again, you won't notice an difference in your ability to track noise in-game, but it will significantly reduce the CPU demands on your computer.

Anyways, if this is something you tried to no avail then I apologize. I'm only posting this because of the huge influx of posts I've seen about stuttering and FPS lag in the subforum, and how it took me a few days of digging around to find this solution. If you have any questions (I'm terrible at explaining things), I'll be glad to answer them in the comments. I'm just ecstatic to have the game at a 'playable' level now, and I just hope that this will help solve or ease the issues that other CS:GO'ers are experiencing.

Tried 1080p, got 30-40fps. Went to 1600x900, got 30-40fps. Finally I tried 1366x768 and get around 40fps. I am running on lowest possible settings with v-sync OFF and it isn't much fps different to highest setings. I appreciate the help guys but I think I'm a just wait till my birthday so I can get my new i7 4790k. There probably is no fix for this. It's probably the fact that I'm on dual core. I may upgrade to an i5 in the mean time. Thanks again all.

Ok, I deleted the flash folder and upon launching it says that I need it. I'm repairing my game as this clearly didn't work.

Slow down a bit mate. I didn't say delete your entire flash folder, I mentioned a specific flash file inside of it....

Oh right. I actually saw it and was like "ok, background file. DELETE THE WHOLE FOLDER" sorry for jumping to conclusions. You can tell I'm having a bad day :(

Its ok, I 100 percent understand. It is frustrating not to have your pc work the way it should. I honestly think that you should fully re-install CS:GO, start fresh. That might fix the problem its self. I think its a coding problem that can be fixed, not a hardware limitation.

I'm going to try it without this background file. If it persists then I'll start fresh. Thanks for the help :)
