The title is pretty self explanatory, though I would like to keep the price of the HDD at or below a total of $150. Here's my build, tell me what you guys think:

Given your budget, I can't make a case for separate SSD + HD. Using text boxes here (both desktop and laptop), users have been unable to tell which machines have the SSHD versus which ones have the SSD + HD..... at the point when ya have a K processor, $60 cooler, SLI MoBo, investing in separate SSD + HD is hard to justify.

SSHD boots in 16.5 seconds
SSD boots in 15.6 seconds

I can't tell the difference without a stopwatch or benchmark

While an SSHD would be hard to tell from an SSD in just windows booting; 8gb of SSD isnt going to accelerate many other apps. (thats all an SSHD has on it)
Once you start launching apps that aren't cached on the SSD you're left with just an normal hdd.

I would suggest a 120GB SSD and a 1 or 2 TB HDD and you would still be below your budget ceiling. Install your most played games to the SSD and the stuff that doesnt need the speed, like movies, pics, music... - to the HDD.

The problem is his $150 storage budget is costing him a k processor and Z97 SLI capable Mobo which would have a much larger ROI than the SSD. A year old Windows install with Witcher 3 (40GB) installed or other modern game leaves everything else on the HD.

Also remember that the mechanical portion of that drive is much faster than the competition. We have been testing laptops w/ SSD+HD versus SSHDs for over 2 years in the field for engineering and CAD applications as well as whatever peeps wanna do on their own time at home .... as yet, no one has been able to tell them apart except for the fact that the boot drives require periodic maintenance to remove windows clutter and keep the OS drive footprint below 80GB.

Ideally, Id have an SSD + SSHD but not till after the MoBo was SLI capable and CPU / MoBo / Cooler give me a decent OC.
