My specs are as follows:
Motherboard: p5e-vm hdmi
CPU: Intel Core 2 extreme Q6850
GPU: Previous : HD3850, New: HD7870
Power Supply: 500w
RAM: 3GB DDR2

I'm pretty sure that I correctly installed the new GPU, making sure that I removed all of the old drivers. Everything seems to be working fine when using the computer until I launch a game. The game runs temporarily, but then the screen freezes with a random colour. The computer is still running and I can still hear the game through the speakers. Then when I try to reboot the screen is just appearing blank!

here is what it looks like : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBc4jK31xdg

Any help would be much appreciated!

I used DDC I think it was called, which deleted the old drivers then turned off the PC, I then put the new GPU in and installed the new dricers.

Another thing I forgot to mention was that after this happens, if I leave the PC off for long enough It does reboot, with the message, "overclocking failed, adjust the bios settings" or something like that.

Yes it happened with BioShock as well, and I assume all the other games will be the same.

Ive just disable the onboard graphics card from the bios and will try the game again now.

Thanks for the reply!

James

Edit : still same problem

Ah, I think I know what it is James. However if it's possible test out a different monitor and a different cable, but 90% chance it's the GPU or BIOS settings.

Check the GPU as well, remove it and inspect the connector for any damage if nothing then you might need to tweak the GPU's settings in your BIOS by lowering the voltage/memory. However don't do that last step until someone can guide you through because that's a great way to damage your card.

Firstly do the other steps beforehand, hopefully someone else can guide you through that since each component is different or better yet it doesn't even come to it. You can find tools that tweak your GPU but I wouldn't risk it if you don't know what your doing since you can fry your entire card like that.

Tried all the other steps already, don't think the GPU is damaged, and I tried the HDMI output instead of the DVI and connected it to my tv, still the same problem.

Thanks

You have utilities you can do it with as well, the main idea of this is to underclock your GPU to see if it makes any changes. So primarily you'll want to slightly lower the voltage and the clock speed so you'd lower the Mhz. This will also reduce the temperature. This would be done in very small increments and you'd keep a eye on everything making sure it's running fine.

I'm not sure which utility AMD uses, since I don't overclock/underclock myself. The thing is this might not even resolve the issue, just a idea :\

Found out what the problem is :

"For a system using a single AMD reference design Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 28 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

For a system using a single AMD reference design Radeon HD 7870 Boost Edition (Tahiti LE) graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 32 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Ah glad you found the issue, it did cross my mind if you needed a better PSU but I thought 500w would be enough to it least boot. Want me to help you find a better PSU or will you be fine doing it on your own?

Hope I helped somewhat man.

Yes you have been very helpful thank you! And I think I'm going to return the card and get a gtx 750ti as that should run fine on my PSU and will be quite a bit less expensive, but thanks for offering.

No worries. Perhaps select a solution, even if it's your own. :)
