Depends on your headphones, the Xonar DG has a built in amp, so it can power headphones that require it. I have the Bayerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohm version, and they are pretty quite out of a source with no amp, so I definitely benefit from it.

The thing is, at such a cheap price, what do you really have to lose? If it turns out that the sound quality doesn't sound that great to you, well, it's only 35 bucks. I came from a cheaper PCI sound card that I picked up at micro center, and when I upgraded to the Xonar DG I could definitely see a difference.

I don't have the DGX, but I do have the regular DG and it's great. I upgraded to a setup that was much more expensive and ended up selling it and going back to the DG because I couldn't really notice a difference in sound quality.

What really helped the sound.. I recently added a subwoofer.. sounds great with headphones to.. I have read the newer mother boards have built in sound enhancers.. creative talks about that at there site.. about how they try and stay ahead of the game.. edging out the competition
