Pentium G3258 vs. FX 4300 or 6300

Ok so I am just wondering which one of the Cpu's in the title is better, because I am going to do extreme overclocking on some of the lower end Cpu's just to see if someone can purchase one of these and OC it to be a "next-gen"

If not then it's ok I was just wondering if there was such a thing for cheap parts, and this is mainly for entertainment purposes

well tom's has used the pentium in the last couple quarterly builds. you can get a good look at that one oc'ed by reading the article. i'd be more interested in what you can do with the fx 4300. it's a cheap quad core ready made for the oc world. i see 6300's in benchmarks often enough but rarely the 4300. so from my own personal interest i'd like to see the 4300 used with that high end gpu.

i'm willing to bet it offers some pretty good performance despite what all the intel worshipers say about the lowly fx series. :D

just my thoughts. post some numbers on whatever you do decide on just for our own fyi if you don't mind.

I know but I just want to see how they hold up at that price range for people who might not be able to afford an i5, and if the 980 is too much how about testing it with a 280x, since I have 970 in my actual build but i have an old MSI 280x in its box

That's exactly what I was trying to do:) I was going to see if a normal quad-core could actually pair up with an awesome GPU and still survive without bottlenecks:lol:

It was also to see if AMD could beat an Intel card too...

i could see the vision :D that's why i suggest the 4300. the 6300 we already know performs very well with a 970/980 and will easily top 60+ fps at 1080p.

not much fun there. only real concern is that the 4300 costs as much as the 6300 so makes little sense for real world build. but i still wanna see how it does :)

the x4 860k is about the same price as the pentium and would be a good comparison as well. that cpu has been overlooked mostly despite being a newer generation than the old 750/760k

that could also be an interesting cpu to work with.

If you suggest 4300 I will see if I can get one soon to test most likely getting here over the weekend and I will test it with a gigabyte 970 mobo, a rog crosshair v and multiple coolers for different budgets and I will get back to this thread

P.S. I may test with 980 AND R9 280x

I might just be able to do both, I found a pretty good discount on the Intel side but I am still going to do AMD for sure

Oh and here is the deal-->http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/g3258bundle.aspx

NEVERMIND it is in-store pickup only and they don't have a micro-center where I am:pfff:

that is a good deal. mobo is $80 alone. i'd grab a couple for builds but rarely use them. people i build for on the low end usually get apu's since they are old and non gamers :)

but man for $99 that's hard to pass up.

i can never find the combos on their site. how do you locate them? i see these specials all the time but can never find them myself.

Ok 1st try with Fx-4300 on air(hyper 212 evo) I got 4.2Ghz at start (3.8v) and then slowly moved up to a stable 4.6GHz (4v) on the Gigabyte 970A-DS3P, then on the rog crosshair v I started at the same 4.2GHz on air and was able to make it to 4.9GHz Stable! (4v)

Now with water cooling (corsair H100i) on GB board I found myself at 4.4GHz (3.9v), then slowly made it up to 5.0Ghz (4.1v) stable or it would freeze and crash the system if I went any higher (tested with prime95 btw)

On the Rog Crosshair V I started at 4.4GHz again and slowly made it all the way to 5.4GHz stable! (again at 4.1v)
I will leave gaming results from gtx 980 and 280x under this, and in both air cooling it didnt go over 65c and in the water cooling it got up to 57c with the GB board and 54c on Asus board

Tested on 64p servers 24/7 paracel storm( very intensive map)
GTX 980 Air Gigabyte board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-32.1 avg. 54.6 highest- 112.2 (would drop to 30's when large firefight where more than 10 players were near me)

GTX 980 Air Asus board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-49.7 avg. 60.8 highest- 137.6 (very stable, actually the results were VERY surprising and smooth gameplay, didn't notice the fps drops)

GTX 980 Water Gigabyte board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-45.8 avg. 70.3 highest- 154.3 (super stable, just the ASUS board on air was a little more smooth)

GTX 980 Water Asus board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-64.2 avg. 77.9 highest- 179.3 (the asus board accepted the OC more so it ran very well and the bottlenecking didn't seem like it existed, very happy with these results)

R9 280x Air Gigabyte board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-42.8 avg.-64.5 highest- 95.3 (much better results than 980 because of the GPU usage, which was much higher and not as much stuttering)

R9 280x Air Asus board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-47.1 avg.-69.4 highest- 123.3 (Very good results, if this was my gaming rig it'd be pretty damn good)

R9 280x Water Gigabyte board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-58.8 avg.-74.0 highest- 154.6 (Actually this was better than 980 results, again most likely because of bottlenecking)

R9 280x Water Asus board BF4 Ultra 1080p- lowest-68.2 avg.-78.3 highest- 193.4 ( EXTREMELY stable, I must have been by myself while I looked at sky to get high results, but VERY GOOD)

Overall the Fx-4300 is a great chip as long as you -Water cool it on GOOD motherboard, not cheap one, and don't pair it up with beastly GPU and expect to get good results but on the Asus board Corsair H100i and R9 280x the 4300 can be a deadly chip in BF4:D

I will be working with the x4 860k AND the Pentium in a few weeks if I can get enough time because the 4300 results were just amazing

I'd like to see the 860k too, solely because I'm debating whether to get that or the 760k.

Based on my knowledge of it right now, I'd say it is similar to the Fx-4300 just on a different chipset that doesn't have an upgrade path but it is a bit better than a 4300 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-FX-4300-vs-AMD-Athlon-X4-860K

yah those numbers are pretty awesome. i am surprised the 280x beat the 980 though. that is a little interesting and suggesting that the 280x is not bottlenecked as much as the 980. either result is pretty awesome for the old quad core folks dismiss right off.

i would expect a bit better out of the 860k since it is newer tech. i am sitting here refreshing the screen awaiting the next bunch of numbers. i hope this can help shoot down a lot of the "i'd get the pentium anniversary over ANY amd chip!!!" and other such nonsense folks like to pass around. clearly this is still a solid option and i would be curious to see how it stacks against the pentium and 860k for a budget face off i have been wishing toms would do for a while now. i am betting even with a super oc on the pentium it won't match those numbers.

Ya, I am extremely happy with the performance of the old 4300 and right now I am putting the test bench together for Far Cry 4

GTX 980 Air Cooling Gigabyte board Far Cry 4 Ultra 1080p
CPU clock-4.6GHz 4v
Lowest-13.8, only dropped when I entered the crafting menu
Average-38.2, pretty good still better than PS4 or Xbox One because they are locked at 30fps
Highest-71.2, I didn't see this happen so it must of only been a split second

All on Mission 13, Reclamation
In my opinion Ubisoft crushed the PC gamer experience and it would be much higher if they weren't involved in this game.
