hello, just bought Asus Z97 Pro and ran into some funny BIOS behaviours. BIOS is the latest version 2012

1. the Last Modified button in Advanced Mode

if I haven't modify anything and click it, the BIOS will freeze (sometimes I can see a coloured bar above with 8192 MB written on it, my RAM capacity I reckon) and nothing can be done except hard reset the computer. if I have changed something, it sure works, showing whatever I just changed. my question is, what is this? is this normal? why freeze? why not showing a message: "nothing has been modified yet, Ok" or empty box, or doesn't do anything rather than freeze the entire computer?

should I be worry? is it the hardware? RMA then? or just BIOS problem not perfect yet, despite the fact it's the latest version. then should I try reinstall the BIOS and see? or roll back to previous version maybe? what version then is best? or this is a persisted problem throughout all BIOS version and haven't been fixed yet since. then I should just avoid clicking that. though it sure feels annoying there's one button of death there

will this freezing break the mobo? or is it the RAM maybe? I use Corsair Vengeance Pro CMY8GX3M2A1600C9A. it's not in the QVL, I know, but the store guy said it'll work fine. maybe the CPU? it's i5-4690k. the GPU? MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G. anything else you wanna know? 2 SATA HDDs, 1 DVD-RW

2. the Q-Fan Control is messed up

I only use one 3-pins DeepCool blue LED fan attached on the CHA_FAN4 connector. it should be DC then on the Q-Fan Control, right? if I select Silent, the actual working profile is Turbo looking at the fan speed, and when I return to the Q-Fan Control screen, the Turbo got selected. on the contrary, if I select the Turbo, the working profile is actually Silent, and when I return to the Q-Fan Control screen, the Silent got selected. in other words: the Silent and Turbo profiles got switched! this is BIOS problem, right? not my fan?

also, if I select Full Speed, then afterwards, I select other profile, the fan speed won't go down reflecting whatever other profile I selected. it stuck at full speed. this is fixable by Load Optimal Default Setting (F5)

3. last question, after shutdown, the LED on keyboard and mouse still light up until I pull the power cord completely from the electrical socket. so, this is... normal behaviour, right? not mobo defect or something. will not break my keyboard & mouse

do these happen to you guys too who own the same mobo or at least same Asus Z97 series? plz tell me. I hope this is a good buy. if it just BIOS problem, I don't mind, I reckon there will be more update on that in the future, but if it's hardware, or it'll break hardware, ouch :(

I wanted to buy other mobo brand, but just my luck, after doing so many long hours of researches on that particular brand & type, it's out of stock forever here, and the store just told me that fact the minute I just step in the store bringing my heavy PC case (they told me it was in stock a day ago...). so didn't want to go home empty handed after that back breaking effort of bringing the case, after some deliberation by quick browsing the internet, I bought this Z970 Pro... I hope I won't be disappointed

thanks :)

how to do BIOS/CMOS reset?

my spec:

Asus Z97 Pro with latest BIOS ver 2012
i5-4690k (stock speed for now) + Cooler Master Hyper 212X Turbo (2 fans pull push setup)
Corsair Vengeance Pro CMY8GX3M2A1600C9A @1600 Mhz 4GB x2 on A2 & B2 slots
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G Twin Frozr V
Hitachi SATA HDD 500 GB for OS
Seagate Barracuda SATA HDD 1 TB for data, partitioned into 4
LG DVD-RW
Corsair CX600 Builder Series 600W 80+ Bronze
Logitech PS/2 cable keyboard, USB cable mouse
1x DeepCool fan 12cm, 3-pins plugged into CHA_FAN4
2x random brand(less) cheap fan 12cm, get power directly from PSU through 4-pins molex
2x random brand(less) cheap fan 8cm, get power directly from PSU through 4-pins molex

this is a new build, the store guy just finished put it on. updated the BIOS, then I took it home. nothing has been altered, all run in default. click that Load Modified button, freezes (if I haven't change anything)...

or.. it's just the BIOS sucked

what I need to know is, for someone who have this Asus Z97-Pro or similar series, what will happen if you click that Load Modified button without having change anything, will it freeze like me? if not, what is normally happen? so I know it's not the BIOS doing that, could be incompatibility with my other hardware, I suspect RAM.

also that Q-Fan Control profile problem

oh, don't forget to tell me what's your BIOS version, if it's not latest 2012, I'll roll back to your version then

1. Freeze problem > solved
I manage to recreate the freeze constantly. apparently if I use the XMP Profile of the RAM, save & exit, return to BIOS, click Last Modified, it'll always freeze. if I change anything later, that modified items will shown on Last Modified replacing the supposed XMP Profile modification, no freeze. in short, Last Modified hates XMP Profile

also on OCed state with XMP, sometimes the Last Modified shows weird character. I changed 2 items in Boot, save & exit, return to BIOS, click Last Modified, it showed the modified 2 items alright, followed by empty lines, one line with weird character, followed by more empty lines, then ended with those modified 2 items above repeated below. weird huh

anyway, this all solved by resetting CMOS with that jumper trick. no freeze, nothing. Last Modified shows everything normally, with and without XMP. so... what gives? o_O

to be more safe, I re-flash the BIOS, still same 2012 version, with the file I downloaded from ASUS site, put it in my flashdisk drive and plug it into the black USB2.0 port in the back I/O panel. I saw the store guy flashing the BIOS with his flashdisk plugged into my case front panel which the port connector connected to the USB2.0 connector mid-board

so... what happened? I'm curious... maybe the store guy file was corrupted? either when downloaded, when copied into his flashdisk, or due to my sucked front panel USB port. I remember when he flashed the BIOS at the store, it took some time to finish, but when I flashed yesterday it was pretty fast

or something happened when the store guy was putting up my rig, I dunno, static? pull the CMOS jumper, free the static LOL. I hope the mobo hardware itself is fine, no future problem. sorry, I'm still new in this, but eager to learn things

2. fan problem > not really solved, but I can live with it
the weird fan problem still there. select Silent, Turbo is on, select Turbo, Silent is on. after selecting Silent, return to the Q-Fan Control, the selected profile is Turbo and vice versa.

though, after resetting CMOS and re-flashing BIOS, the Full Speed RPM problem is gone, the speed doesn't get stuck anymore when I select other profile

I tried to move from CHA_FAN4 to CHA_FAN2, problem still persists. but this time, unlike CHA_FAN4, if I select Silent, then return to Q-Fan Control, Silent is still selected, not Turbo, and vice versa, but seeing the RPM speed, it still got switched, ie. select Silent, the working RPM speed is actually Turbo, and vice versa

out of curiosity, I tried to select Silent (and Turbo later) in CHA_FAN4 option, although no fan is plugged, and indeed, when I return to Q-Fan Control, Turbo is selected, and vice versa

so... what gives? BIOS error on 3-pins fan? or it's my fan? I know, it's cheap DeepCool 12cm fan I bought years ago. or... it's the mobo?! I hope not. I've tried 2 different CHA_FAN. I might try to roll back to BIOS version 1314 to see how's the fan is, is it still doing that, but... I'm kinda lazy now. overall it works, I use Standard anyway, so I think I'll leave it like that for now

on the other note, selecting Standard, Silent, Turbo from the Advanced Mode>Monitor screen, it works normally, the weirdness only happens in Q-Fan Control (F6). when there will be a new BIOS from Asus, I'll be sure to flash it. hopefully Asus will continue to sort out the kinks till all is perfect

what do you think, guys? any of you using 3-pins fan having this problem? tell me how's your rig doing. hope it's not my mobo hardware problem, unfortunately I don't have another fan with 3/4-pins to test with, the others are still old 4-molex power pins

Try and update your BIOS, but be sure to hook the system up to a very good UPS system. If the power fails mid way through a BIOS update, it will leave you in some very murky water.
Good luck
