Hello,

I need a "stand-in" card for my build as I'm on a tight budget and plan on upgrading later, but I've gotten myself into a bit of a pickle. I was planning to go with a 750 ti and didn't really look at the AMD cards but when I did, it got me overwhelmed with all these good cards, I just don't know what to choose to satisfy me while I save up for a higher end card (and boy is that going to be painful choosing that one). If anyone could recommend any card (and please be specific with the manufacturer and type of card) it would be great. I was looking at the XFX r9 280 DD Black Edition, but I don't know. I need your help.

Thanks and regards

I thought it was you again in the Systems forum but was not sure. So. 380t look like one of the good examples, well though design, good airflow and lots of ventilation. If you keep in mind the cooler height limit of 150 you can make a nice build inside. CM TX3 is a nice one, I use it in my PC due to the same reason (could not fit 212 evo). But I do not overclock, so not sure about its performance there. If you insist on clocking - probably will be better to use the kraken.

Let's dig a little deeper:

1) What is your Processor/PSU/Games you want to play?

2) What level of settings and resolution are you seeking now?

3) Is a variable refresh rate monitor like G-sync or Free-sync something you'd be interested in ever doing with this GPU?

1) CPU I'm planning to use is the i7 4790k, PSU is the Corsair RM650 as it's a mini itx build and it will only be having one card (yes the case supports full length cards) and the games I plan to play are games like Far Cry 4, Battlefield 4 being the more demanding but I do play a lot of GMod.

2) I plan on maxing out the settings as much as possible but not seeking 4K as much, I have to be honest I haven't really gone into resolution and all that so I dunno, I guess I'll just use whatever I can get with my monitor.

3) Haven't really looked into it, but I guess I will later when I decide to get a new monitor.

R9 280 is much faster than 750 TI. Actually R9 280 is even faster than GTX 960. That said please read ahead.
What is the case that you plan to use? Almost all mITX cases have serious ventilation issues. If I was you - I'd go for S or T I7 instead of K. Overclocking is bad idea in small case and stock cooler and even with aftermarket low profile cooler.
Also I'd definitely go with NVIDIA GPU for a small case as Maxwell GPUs (750 TI, 960, 970) power consumption and heat output is much lower than the current AMD offerings. 960 can be found for $300.

I plan on using the Corsair 380t, but now I'm thinking whether I should just build a ATX mid tower build instead of mITX.
