Approximate Purchase Date: 3-6 Months - Really no rush right now.

Budget Range: I would like 3 separate options. One at or around 2k. One at or around 3k. One at 4k.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Workstation

Are you buying a monitor: Maybe

Parts to Upgrade: none, this will be a fresh second build

Water-cooling: Yes, been looking at kits, but would like a full parts likes for a full custom setup

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon Prime, Newegg. I am open to others. Florida, Fort Myers.

Parts Preferences: by brand or type: Intel

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Yes

Your Monitor Resolution: Full HD TV soon to be 4k TV

Additional Comments: I use AutoCad 2015, 3dsMax, and Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. Would like to do a full custom water cooled system. I do like the Corsair 750D case but open to options on cases.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Time for a dedicated workstation and more of a investment in the long run.

Solution
MarcDHS,

In my view, workstations are best when optimized for the largest project on the most demanding application. From you outline,, I'd assume that 3ds Max would be the most demanding application.

As you're using Autodesk and Adobe programs, a Quadro graphics card is suggested.

Given that current CPU's and GPU' s are using ever less power and heat output is correspondingly reduced, I feel that a custom liquid cooing system is not indicated and in fact may have distinct negatives in the form of unnecessary noise and potential fluid leaks.

I don't see any need to get a custom watercooling loop. A noctua nhd15 should suffice for overclocking that cpu.

As is apparent, the 4th system is a fair amount over $4,000. This is included as a demonstration of the cost of making the step to a dual processor- Xeon E5-2600 series CPU's are bloody expensive. As this also results in adding only two cores, I think it points to the much better cost /performance ratio achieved by the six core E5-1600 series system. The best value is the E5-1650 v3 system, the best performance and most forward-looking would be the 4th, dual Xeon system, and the best cost / performance choice would be System 3 due to the eight cores and the M.2 Ultra OS / Applications / working files drive. If your projects are very large and there's a lot of CPU-based rendering, I'd suggest System 3. If you spend more time using 2D CAD, image processing and 3D modeling, I'd go for the E5-1650 v3 system and possibly add an M.2 SSD. If you're doing extreme 3D modeling with very heavy textures, and/or plan to go into animation, System 3 with a Quadro K5200.

Cheers,

BambiBoom
