I own this for PS4. It was an amazing purchase. I love this game. Every aspect of it. When you say online, it is important to know that the game cannot be played offline.
It is an FPSMMO. The different modes, are PvP and co-op. The PvP mode is wonderful. There are different game types available. There are objective oriented games as well as just slaughtering. Small teams, large teams, FFA. It's all there. The co-op play is also just as fun. You can group together with friends and go take down extreme bosses or even tackle a raid together. The in-game equipment can be customized and upgraded. The leveling system is easy to understand. This game is just an all around good buy.
The biggest thing to consider, and if money is no object then this statement is irrelevant, is that the fairly recently released DLC pack "The Dark Below" has unleashed new content into the game that only players with the DLC can access. If you are to purchase this game, I would suggest getting the add-on as well, considering it will not allow any other more seasoned players and equipment advantage over you. Also it is important to note that you cannot reach the maximum level with out all of the add-on packs as they release.
