I just bought a laptop of Rakuten and the specifications stated it had a "802 11 ABG internal wireless card" which I assumed was the wireless wifi adapter.

So I boot up the PC and try to connect to WiFi.... doesn't even detect the network. Only thing I see is something that says "Verizon Wireless" and when I click on it, itll say I will be charged for roaming costs....

Now I have a usb wifi adapter that I tested and that worked fine.

In device manager the item in question is called a "Sierra Wireless MC8355 - Gobi 3000. HS - USB Mobile Broadband Device"

What is this... did I get screwed?

Solution
If it was disabled in the BIOS it would not show up in Windows.

It could be anything from a faulty wi-fi module or they just forgot to install it.

Seems like it. That is a cellular modem. 802.11 A/B/G would definitely be WiFi (Though the support for A is a little surprising)

That is says USB is a little odd. I thought the majority of the GOBI chips were installed in mini PCI Express form factor, or soldered to the board.

Might wander into the BIOS, it might just be disabled. Also check the system for a WiFi on/off switch.

WiFi switch is in on the "On" position, along with the green notification light. But no WiFi networks show up, only the Verizon Wireless which is a cellular network as you said... I will check the BIOS but I doubt I will find anything. Wouldn't device manager at least show 802 11 wireless card if there was one?

Regardless I appreciate the help, I will have to contact the seller about getting a refund.
