About a month ago I built a new system and I chose to buy the Asus R9 290 OC graphics card. The problem is not only does this thing run very hot, it's also extremely loud. In not so demanding games there is no problem, but when playing games like Far Cry 4 or Battlefield 4 the card gets distractingly loud. The fans are a lot louder than any card i've ever owned.

I just can't imagine playing any games in the summer when the room temperature is going to be a lot warmer. And This card is advertised as running 20% cooler and being 3x quieter than the reference card...

Most people in the reviews said this card ran cool and quiet and just a few said it was loud. Maybe they haven't played any demanding games as I don't understand how anyone can say this card is quiet. I tried playing around with GPU tweak to see how it sounds and anything above 65% fan speed is just way to loud.

Anybody else own this card and can comment on it?

I'd also like to know if it's a good enough reason to send it back and get a refund? As I don't think there is actually anything "wrong" with the card.

Thanks!

Well the reference card sounds like an airplane...
It's a very hot card. What are your temps under laod? Maybe you could try a custom fan profile.
I have the r9 290 windforce and it's noisy but not so bad. How is the airflow in your case?
If nothing of what we suggest works, I would at least try to give it back.

Although the card does run very hot, it doesn't bother me as much as the noise the fan produces to keep the card under normal temperatures. I'll report back later with the temperatures under load as I am not a home right now. But they did seem pretty normal. For a R9 290 that is.

For the custom cooling, I thought those were meant for the reference cards. And if there are custom cooling solutions for this card in particular, I'm not sure I want to shell out another 50-100$ for that.

Do you think I could get a refund or at least in store credit for the card even if it does perform as it should? Or sending it back would be pointless. I bought it from Ncix.
