Question about Xeon cpu's

Solution

I believe that the Haswell Refresh contained only consumer CPUs, so no there is no Xeon equivalent of an i7-4790k. There are Xeon microprocessors available that have the GPU disabled though.

Yes, the Xeon CPU series is mainly meant for servers and with most servers you don't really need a gpu for that. They also have a lot more cores then the i7 ranging from 4-10

No, Xeon CPUs clocks are locked but other than that yes they are close. The Xeon 1231v3 is the same as the i7 4790 without the iGPU. There are also Xeons with iGPUs. The 1230v3 is equivalent to a 4770 btw. The instruction set also differs a bit.

There is an entire line of e3 Xeons with the 1281v3/1286v3 being the strongest at 3.7ghz base and 4.1ghz turbo. The e3 models are based directly off of the LGA1155/1150 i5/i7 chips.

The models ending in 0 or 1 have disabled igpu
The models ending in 5 or 6 have igpu
The models ending in 1 or 6 are Haswell refresh versions of the models ending in 0 or 5
v2 indicates Ivy Bridge, v3 indicates Haswell.
Models with neither v2 or v3 are Sandy Bridge.

The e3-1230v3/1231v3 are the greatest value. Anything greater than the 1240v3/1241v3 are not reasonably priced and don't really make a lot of sense when compared to the 4790k. The 1286v3 mentioned above is over $600.

Note: The e3-122x models do not have hyperthreading.

Ok. That answers my questions. thank you.

Im just in a bit of a pickle here. I am going to get about $539 soon. I was going to get a gtx970, but with all news about those cards makes me want to wait. So for now, i was thinking about an upgrade for my base system. I just built a new rig,http://pcpartpicker.com/p/L4vsWZ

I like my i5 4690k, but i do some linux stuff and feel it could be a little faster. Im contemplating upgrading to the ddr4 compatible stuff but holy cow is it expensive. $500 would be a good start to get the cpu. But if you guys think those prices will drop in a year or so then i think id just wait on that and go ahead and get a gtx980 or a 4790k

List all of the parts that you currently have and we can see the order of upgrade importance.

The GTX970 is still a GREAT video card.

You can get an i7 5820k, cpu cooler, X99 mobo, and 8GB ddr4 RAM for around $600. If you sold your i5 + mobo you would easily be able to afford the jump.

So you don't have a video card at all right now? I would just get a 970 or 980 and keep what you have. You could run two 970s or 980s with your current setup.

Are you taking about the 5820k vs the 5930k? The 5820k supports 28 pcie lanes and the 5930k supports 40. The only other difference is clock speed, l3 cache, and price.
