my dvd drive has the yellow exclamation mark next to it,i can't read anything off any cd's or dvds.
It is a hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-h12n dvd drive.
I get the following message in device manager-Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).

Does anyone know how i can get this back working please.
I tried uninstalling but just get the same message after windows xp has reinstalled the drive.

I don't want to start messing with the registry without someone who knows what they are doing as i will no doubt probably make it worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Follow these instructions exactly... first linked page contains possible cause and fixes, the second contains step by step instructions to delete the registry values that are mentioned in the first page on step 3. Apply this and restart the computer. This should solve the problem but if not successfull, try again following steps 1 through 9 given in the first page.

Many, many thanks Chicano, that has cured the problem with my dvd drive.
Now it is working as it should, not tried using my disk burning software yet though. Will see what happens when i do use it,if i have any problems this will be the first site i come to for help/advice.
I noticed in the link you posted for me it mentioned uninstalling I-tunes.
I had a feeling it was something to do with that program so have uninstalled it,will reinstall shortly, hopefully it won't mess up my system again.
One thing that has started to happen when i star xp is i get a box opening asking me to install SCI-Agent_setup.exe,it says from unknown publisher,i have no idea what this is,any ideas?I just have to keep clicking on the cancel button.
For the first time in quite a while windows update wants me to download and install 6 files all related to Microsoft .Net Framework 4,about to do that,if i get any more problems after installing i tunes and the windows update files i will be back on here seeking advice.
Once again, thankyou for taking the time to post the solution to my problem it is appreciated very much.

I didn't find information on the SCI-Agent but it must be some potentially unwanted software. Anything that prompts for download or installation without your asking for is to be refused and removed with a malware remover such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Microsoft Net Framework is necessary to run some software which generally ask you to previously install it, so if you're not installing anything at this time, either ignore it or allow the installation. You can also download it from different sources so it's not important that you install it rightaway.. so, it's all up to you.

iTunes is known to cause some issues so you may want to replace it with a iTunes alternative software which are created without the inconveniences... you may want to replace it with one of the alternatives listed in this website. Some may have a different appearance so pick one that resembles iTunes and/or is in the top rated.
