Help fix my external WD mybook

in crystaldiskinfo

it wrote
C5 Pending Current Sector Count 200 200 0 0000000001 caution

as soon as i saw that, i back up my data, still havent back up all of the data because its too large
after backing up a few data and planning to back up the rest tomorrow
i check the crystaldiskinfo again
now the pending current sector count become 000000004 ?
help !

Hey there, Hendra!

I'm very sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Book! :(
Great work on the immediate backup, very good first step!
I'd suggest to test the external using WD's Data LifeGuard diagnostics tool as well. Make sure to pass the extended as well as the quick test. Share the SMART status data from the tool.
Here's a link to the utility: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=hTYdFV
Make sure you manage to find some extra space somewhere for the rest of the data from the WD My Book!

Keep me posted with the results!

my wd book still have 200gb free
emm, to test with wd lifeguard
i just do the quick and extend test
if there's a checkmark green on it , then it's fine ?

how to share / see the smart status?
is it view result ?

Right-click on the drive in the WD Data LifeGuard interface and select Show SMART Disk Info.
It doesn't necessarily mean that the drive is okay though, even if it says PASS.
I strongly recommend backing up and contacting our tech support for assistance.
If your drive is still under warranty, you can send out an RMA request and get a replacement.
You can check your warranty here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=dsXLZq
Here's a link that explains how to RMA your product: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=eIqHDP

Please, do copy and share the SMART data from the DLG tool.

Hope this helps!

Hendra, I would say that everything seems okay for now. You shouldn't be scared of the Current Pending Sector Count due to the fact that they are not Reallocated Sectors. This just means that you have to be careful and check your drive regularly, just in case the count increases. Keeping a backup of the data somewhere else will surely give you some peace of mind!
You can try fixing this by performing a FULL ERASE (write zeros) on the WD My Book! This will erase all your data on the HDD, so make sure you have everything backed up. You can use the Data LifeGuard to write zeros (FULLY ERASE) on your drive.
Here's a tutorial: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=69UiAu
Afterwards, check the SMART status in both utilities again. It might fix the current pending sector count. :)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted!

thank you
is performing extended test can fix this thing also ? because it's a bit of a shame to wipe all of my data
so i do not need to do the extended test?
yesterday when i back up my data
there's 1 data name data1.bin that cannot be copied, so i retried it 3 times maybe
after that i skip it

is that why the pending current sector increased from 1 to 4 ?
should i delete those data1.bin ?

No, actually you might need to write zeros a few times and see if the sector count changes.
Full Erase it once, it might take a while but you can use your computer for other stuff while performing this.
You'll probably want to do at least two, checking the SMART values in between (for curiosity's sake), and do one Long/Extended SMART test afterwards.
The FULL ERASE will fully wipe out the drive. This takes longer, but helps to ensure that no data on the drive can later be retrieved using Data Recovery methods. This method is designed for people who are trying to wipe sensitive data from their disk. Which might be the case with you - sensitive data can mean corrupted data as well.

Once you've done this and everything is okay, you can simply copy all your data back to the WD My Book. :)

So , from top to bottom is this
1) Write zeroes 2 times ?
2) Then Full Erase it Once , (how to full erase?)
3)Checking the Smart if increase , (this is when the full erase is ongoing ?)
4)extended test?

Nope. You got it wrong. Writing zeros and full erase is one and the same thing. The full erase process is referred to as writing zeros. So here's the step-by-step:
> Backup the data somewhere else.
> Use the Data LifeGuard tool and this tutorial: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Q7qEGc
to perform a FULL ERASE (a.k.a. WRITE ZEROS) to the drive. It might take some time, so just don't expect it to happen immediately. The full erase takes time because it writes zeros across all the sectors, which is how the data is wiped.
> After the procedure is over, test the drive again using both CrystalDiskInfo & Data LifeGuard, check the SMART status and especially the current pending sector count. (you can see this in Data LifeGuard by running the extended test)
> If the current pending sector count is still in yellow in the utility, perform the FULL ERASE using Data LifeGuard again! Wait it out, until the process is completed.
> Check the SMART status in the utilities again and let me know if there are any changes.

Hope this helps! :)

Hi
emm, other people also said that i can use chkdsk /r ?
is that going to do anything ?

this is what the guy say

writing zeros puts 0s across all sectors, making the drive practically impossible to read or to recover data from (in some cases, even for data recovery companies). This action could fix some software (logical) bad sectors, but not the hardware ones. Do have in mind that this is a long process, it cannot be reversed and it erases all data on the drive.

You do not need to perform Writing Zeros on your drive in order to run a checking program on it.

chkdsk /r does not write zeros and has nothing to do with full erase. It checks the drive for errors (bad sectors and clusters), reads data if possible and reallocates it, and isolates those sectors, but it does NOT write or erase anything from the drive. Here's some more info on this: http://www.sevenforu...disk-check.html

Yes, this is true. I don't think you are dealing with a hardware issue either. You can try running chkdsk /r on the HDD indeed. It won't erase the data. But it also is not a 100 % sure solution to the issue. This command locates bad sectors and recovers readable data, it also checks for physical disk errors. However, you don't have any bad sectors to recover, but of course, you should still try it. It's going to take some time as well, so don't be impatient with it.

Keep me posted! :)

so the chkdsk /r is checking for physical problems ?
does the chkdsk takes a long time like extended test?

if i dont do the chkdsk /r test,
and only do the write zero's, can it be fixed to 0 again ?
because the guy said this

'As I said, a bad sector cannot be fixed. It's a hardware problem, a physical damage which cannot be fixed by a software, hence, the pending current sector will not be reduced. It will increase in time.'

but what my understanding is
At first my pending current sector count is 1

But then after i backup my data
There is one file cannot be copied
The name is data1.bin
So i retry it maybe for 3 times , i dont remember

After that i skip it
And after the backing up is done
My pending current sector become 4

And today i backup the rest of my data
And theres no file cannot be copied
And i checked the pending sector , its still 4
isnt that mean its not a hardware / physical problem ?
because everytime i retry to copy a file that cannot be copied, the number of pending sector is increased?

The chkdsk estimated time cannot be determined exactly, it can take several hours depending on the size of the HDD and the damage.
> Run the chkdsk /r command
> then run the diagnostic utilities on the drive again.
IF the count hasn't change,
> then perform the full erase (writing zeros).

It will take time but it's the only way to troubleshoot the issue!
Let me know if these steps don't work.

where can i find these diagnostic utilities ? (sorry noob question)
ah, so if running the chkdsk only change the pending current sector to 0 , i will be on the clear to use the mybook ?

the guy also say this

"Run WD's tool (both the quick and the extended tests) to see if those 4 sectors are logical or physical bad sectors.

If the program comes clean, a full writing zeros should fix it (you can do that with WD DLGD) and the counter should go back to 0. If the extended test shows errors, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do to fix them and those 4 bac sectors will only increase.

chkdsk /r will also check if those sectors are bad or not and will isolate them BUT IT WILL NOT FIX THEM. This would be a temporary solution.

Running WD DLGD will give you the answer if this is a software or hardware problem, but until you do that, you do not need to write zeros on the drive. "

so should i do the extended test first
or do the chdsk first

sorry for this kinds of question
so many advice dont know which to take

just to clarify some things
while full erase, i can watch youtube and maybe watch my vids on media player classic right?

Please read carefully, me and my colleagues are all saying the same things:
> First run chkdsk /r http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
> then use the diagnostic utilities are Data LifeGuard (DLGD) & CrystalDiskInfo
IF THE SECTOR COUNT HAS NOT CHANGED, THEN
> write zeros (full erase) on the drive using the Data LifeGuard (DLGD) tool
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Q7qEGc

Yes, the software utility (DLGD) will do its job while you watch movies & YouTube.
