I 've got a Acer 5560g laptop. One day I'm gonna check project works on a couple of DVD-r discs but the explorer shows these discs are blank despite they have data on them. Oddly it can play DVD movies with Windows media player flawlessly as well as CD audio discs. The OS is Windows sp1.

Thanks for input.

Some drives, as has already been mentioned, are more picky than others and simply do not play well with DVD-R discs. I have used drives that will recognize a DVD+R disc but refuse to read DVD-R disc. As digitaldoc mentioned have the discs been finalized or closed? If no, do you have access to the computer that was used to record to the disc in question?

Well it is tricky since those folks record those discs in uni library but the computer that burned the discs could read them. The PC that recorded the disc is a VOSTRO 23" AIO and the software they use is ROXIO creator. THe DVD-R disc is a Kodak brand.

Aside from the one in the uni library do you have access to another computer where you could possibly copy the files to a flash drive.

Well I actually copied all the files to my portable hard drive. I just wonder why is that super weird since:

1. Another Dell latitude laptop from 2005 (my prof's laptop) with DVD/CD-RW drive could also read these discs flawlessly

2. I tried them with other VOSTRO AIOs in library and those PCs could also read them flawlessly. The more interesting thing is: Their DVD-RW drives are HT-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT60N ATA Device while my laptop's drive is also HT-DT-ST but DVD-RAM GT34N ATA Device. The model number is slightly different but how the heck could it make such as difference.

That's why I post on this forum because I am not really good at optical drives and firstly I want to find the reason why and the solution for this. I got this from my friend half a year ago and he purchased this laptop like 3 1/2 years ago. He haven't used the DVD drive that much and most DVD movies, DVD game discs and CD Audio discs could run flawlessly. I don't have other DVD-R or DVD+R discs available for test since I usually neglect the optical drive unless I really have to use it.
