I'm new in building a home server but I'm interested in converting myold pc which has a biostar mcp6p m2+ motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ CPU on it.

The board can only do up to 4gb of ddr2 RAM so using software raid like ZFS would not be a good option. I need to know if going with a nice RAID controller from Adaptec, Rocketraid, LSI, etc would be enough to have a home server with 18TB of storage in RAID 5? Or should I just get a modern motherboard and CPU?

Dell Poweredge 2950's have a built in RAID controller, and dual xeon processors (up to 8 cores) with up to 32GB of RAM on eBay for $200 - $300....I pick them up quite often to use at work. They will accept up to 8 drives (some are 2.5" drive bays, others have 3.5" - so make sure before ordering if you have drives already).
