I just want confirmation. I plan on putting my 4tb wd black into this sata 2 enclosure with usb 3 and esata.

From what I understand, be it sata 2 or 3 it shouldn't affect the speeds at all, because the wd black and hdds in general can't saturate sata 2 speeds anyway, right?

Why do they even bother making sata 3 hdds then? just for the "buffer to host" speed? whatever that means.

Hey there, fantasie!

Yes, you would be fine using a SATA 3 WD Black with the SATA 2 enclosure.
The performance gain of SATA 3 over SATA 2 can be noticed in the first 2 seconds of the HDD read/write, but it still has some gain in the burst rate.
However, you won't be able to notice it using the USB 3.0 enclosure, so you should be fine. It shouldn't affect the performance of the WD Black either way.

Good luck! Hope this was helpful! :)
