I have a HP Pavilion laptop, recently upon booting I get a 'boot device missing' error (F30).

I've had the laptop opened and everything is connected alright, so I assume I need a new hard drive.

Is it just a case of buying a new hard drive and reinstalling Windows 8?

Any help is appreciated!

Hi there ixJake,

Most probably your HDD has failed. You can check whether it is recognized by BIOS, though I doubt it.
The best way to see whether this is the case is to connect the drive to another computer either through SATA or externally with USB to SATA cable and see whether it will get recognized correctly.

Hope this will help,
