Upgrading PC with a few existing components

Hi everyone,

My PC conked out on me a while ago, and I've been doing a lot of research trying to figure out the best configuration that I can go with. Two of my most important criteria is that

  • It's GOT to be future proof for at least a while (2 to 3 years, maybe?)
It can't be too costly, as I don't really have too much money to shell out, unfortunately
My primary use of the PC is gaming, and I prefer RPGs, games like Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, Hitman, Batman Arkham series, Bioshock, COD, Battlefield, GTA, etc.

What I would like to carry forward:

  • AMD Phenom II X6 1045T (not OC'd, AM3)
    1 TB SATA HDD
6 GB DDR3 RAM (planning to upgrade to 8 or 12)
As far as the motherboard is concerned, I was considering the ASUS M5A97 MoBo (AMD 970 chipset). Apart from this, I'm a little stumped about which graphics card to buy. (My earlier Radeon HD5450 served me faithfully till its sudden death!) I was initially considering the Sapphire R9 270X (I've never had an Nvidia GPU since AMD's worked great for me), but then I don't know if it'll be enough for games released in, say, 2017.

I'd really appreciate some advice on the graphics card, PSU and motherboard, and if I'm going about this right.

Thanks a ton!

If you want to carry on the CPU, I dont see a reason to get a new mobo. Instead, if your mobo supports AM3+ sockets I would get a newer AMD cpu such as 8150 or 8350, should be like 100-150 bucks.

GPU 290x on sale : http:// I dont know your budget, but that is a very good deal and should be enough for next couple years. I currently have a gtx 780(very similar to 290/290x) and it runs AC Unity maxed out (except for Anti Aliasing) at ~40fps which is very good considering that the game is optimized like sh*t. BF4 runs at stable 60fps maxed out.

PSU: Id go for 600w+ just incase you will upgrade your amd CPU to something like 8150 or 8350. Any reputable and rated PSUs should be fine as long as it has enough watt for your system...

Thanks so much for replying so quickly.
Actually I should've explained, but I didn't want to bore the pants off everyone with a long history. The PCI Xpress slot of my mobo is screwed, which ruined my HD5450. I tested both, mobo with a different card and my card on a different mobo. Neither works. Boo hoo.
So I've got to get a new mobo anyway. And I thought I might as well try on a decent upgrade. I did have AMD's FX series in mind, but my Phenom still has some life left in it and looks like it won't become redundant too soon, so I'd like to see how far it goes.
Anu ideas for the MoBo?

There are tons of options, it all comes down to your budget http:// I would definitely go with AM3+ socket tho so you could upgrade later.
