Need advice for upgrade before NEXT GEN

Hello guys. Im really struggling to make a decision. First of all, these are my specs :

i5 2500k @ stock
P8h62m-LX Asus (i cannot oc the cpu cuz of this mobo)
8 GB ram 1333
1 SSd 128GB
1T HDD WDC
GTX 970 Gigabyte Windforce 3x ( i just bought it a couple of days ago)
PSU Sirtec 750W

So, i usually upgrade my system every 3 years or so. I ve been having this pc (except the 970) from early 2012. It works really good , im ok with it. All the benchmarks ive done (gaming and also synthetic tests) work ok and im not complaining 100% :). I bought the 970 and now im a bit upset about the vram issue but i dont consider it as being a problem cuz it runs really really good, much better than my previous r9 280x . The 970 is not a card for ultra hd play so the fact that the last part of the memory runs slower doesnt really affect gameplay @ full hd.

I've tested it in DA:I, Bioshock, Crysis 3, Metro 2033, CoD:Avanced Warfare, Tomb Raider, Dying Light and so on. Everything @ 1080p almost maxed out (a little bit of tweaking on the AA and postprocessing). You dont feel the difference so i still think its the best graphics card for its money.

So, coming back to my problem :)).... I want to change the cpu + mobo + ram. In the last 10 years ive been doing all my upgrades at a small company here where i live (Bucharest, Romania). Basically what i do is they evaluate my compontents and i pay the extra money for new stuff. So now i would have to choose between these 2 options :

1. Sticking with the i5 path and getting i5 4690K + z97 Mobo + 16Gb ram
2. Going a bit "future-proof-y" and getting a i7 4770K + z87 + 16 Gb ram

Im leaning toward option no 2. The money difference is not that big. So, what's your advice ? Should i go into a more powerful i7 ? I dont want to wait for next gen cpu's cuz i've been following the same upgrade pattern in the last 10 or so years. I always try to get one of the best pc componentes of the current generation than to go with the entry level of the next generation (ie : i3 vs core2duo e8400, my previous rig). Hope you can help me ! Thank you !

I understand you point dirtyferret but i would like to go @ 4.5 ghz. In order to do that i should either buy another mobo for my current i5 2500k (which i dont want to) or to move onto haswell. I can upgrage to 4770K + good mobo + 16 gigs of ram with less than 200$....There are some games in which i could use a little bit of more cpu power (see dying light )....So, should i go with i5 or i7 ? I would like i7 cuz , who knows, maybe they'll start using HT in games . .
