Hi!

I built my own computer several years ago, I'm wondering what's the best CPU I buy to upgrade it, its a socket 775.

Current CPU:
e6420, overlocked to 3.2ghz + water cooled

Motherboard:
Gigabyte P965 DS3

Thanks in advance! Hoping to get some more life outta my rig for modern gaming as it's also got a nice graphics card I upgraded recently (forget the name atm tho)

Cheers,

Thio

Here is your motherboard's CPU Support List. If you're willing to try an unsupported BIOS update, the best processor you can use is the Intel Core2Quad Extreme QX9650 (but normally very overpriced). The best mainstream processor would be the Intel Core2Quad Q9650 (non-extreme version).

I would suggest....

Picking up a Xeon 3085. It's a dual core, socket 775 CPU. Nice thing about it, is that your processor (E6420) overclocked from 2.ish ghz to 3.2 ghz is probably drawing a heck of a lot more power than the 65 watts it's rated at.

Meanwhile, the Xeon 3085 is -stock- speed of 3.0 ghz @ 65 watts and since that's what it's rated at for 24/7 operation (opposed to the consumer class CPUs) it might have some more headroom, or at least be able to hit the same speed at a MUCH lower power point. As for experimentation, it's currently available on eBay for about 30 bucks.

Another choice is to get a Xeon X3360 - those are listing at around $50 on eBay and are easy to find. Thank god for servers being decommissioned. Advantages: quad core at 2.8ish ghz. Disadvantages: probably not as much head room as the dual core Xeon.

Thanks for the comments!

Wolfshadow, is the core2quad extreme a good CPU to overlock ? How does it compare to the normal Core2Quad Q9650 ?
