Possible to plug a 6 pin PSU connector into a GTX970 Strix (8 pins) temporarily?

My new PSU isn't here yet but I want to get started putting my new Asus GTX 970 in, and installing driver etc.

So, no heavy load on the system yet, just setting it up.

Looks to me I should be okay plugging the single available PCIe connector from my old PSU, which has 6 pegs, into the card. I realize this won't be a good long term solution. I just hope to find out if it's reasonably safe to do.

Thanks.

Hello,

While GTX970 is not a very power hungry card, it still needs both 6-pin and 8-pin power plugs connected; most likely it will not work with only the 6-pin plug connected. It is better to wait for the new PSU (a good 500W-600W model).
