Hi All,

I'm in the process of upgrading a 5 year old machine so my son can use it for some light to moderate gaming.

The spec is:
AMD Phenom II X4 940
ASUS M4A78-AM spec
4GB of RAM

I got a new video card (a GTX750) and I wanted to upgrade to 8GB of RAM. I used the system scanner at crucial.com to find the compatible ram but it seemed pricey so I went to amazon to see if I could get it cheaper. I did. But I ended up with 8GB of ecc ram, and the PC wont even boot up.

So I put the old ram back in, the computer is working again and I'm ready to try the ram upgrade again:

crucial recommends this: crucial ram

But it's very pricey, so again I took to amazon and found this: amazon ram

My question is this: can this processor and mobo combo take 8GB of RAM and if so will the amazon ram work? or should I splurge on the crucial ram?

Thanks!

Your mobo spec - 2 x DIMM, Max. 8 GB, DDR2 1200(O.C.)/1066*/800/667 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

This is the approved memory list - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A78AM/HelpDesk_QVL/

I think the crucial ram (DDR2 667) should work. Try cleaning out the dimm slots.

OP, that RAM does look compatible with your motherboard and processor haha.

I did actually find the 'ecc enable' setting in my BIOS and thought I'd struck gold. I turned it on, put the ecc ram back in and.... nothing.... A bit of further googling tells me that the motherboard supports unregistered ecc ram and the stuff I've got is registered
