I have OC'd almost every videocard I have had and done the same for others. Never had an issue. Always helps my games run a little better. Three things to keep in mind if you OC. Do your research first on your videocard. Whats the max operating temps, what results have others obtained when they OC your type of videocard, read up on how to overclock videocards. Make sure you have a good power supply that will meet your needs when u OC. Test your overclocking with good software and keep temps to a common sense level when u overclock anything. Like other posters have said you could break the card even if u follow common sense methods. I have never had an issue with overclocking twenty plus videocards for myself and other peoples rigs over...

Better videocard would be the answer. The Overclock might help a bit, but you'll probably hit 45 instead of 40. Could be something else too, I'd run a 3D Mark benchmark and see if the results are as expected.
