Hi everyone. My internet speed is between 2 to 5 Mbps with the plan im paying for at the moment. I am connected via wireless internet with a 5 bar connection. When I do a speed test on the internet I get around 2.5 Mbps but when I download something for league of legends or Starcraft 2 im only downloading at like 300Kbps. I will also be playing a game and will be fine one second then I lag out the next second and have 400+ ping. I am unsure of what to do at this point. I have ran cleaners on my computer and done avg scans of my whole computer and have no issues. There are 5 other devices on the internet but I am the only one who plays games. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wireless internet is always slower than a straight Ethernet cable and mostly when downloading on steam or via origin or something like that it always drops like I have 5 mbs and it drops to around 1 mb.

300 Kbps approximately equals 2.5 Mbps, so your numbers are correct, just being represented in a different scale.

League of Legends has lag spikes from time to time, and there's really nothing you can do other than trying a different server. I live relatively close to their home office servers, and when I still played it would become unplayable due to lag.

Ok thanks. Does that mean my internet is just not fast enough then? Because ill get sudden ping spikes as well as my download speed will drop down to like 96Kbps.

Your internet sounds like it is working correctly. While you may get better performance by using a wired Ethernet connection, nothing is perfect, and no connection is going to give you 100% all of the time. Too many things influence it. Could be on your end, the server end, and / or somewhere between you and the server. Could also be people on your own network in your home causing issues, congestion at the neighborhood level, net splits, or various other things that affect service.

Also, don't equate throughput to your ping. You can have a very low ping and no bandwidth, or high bandwidth and lousy ping. What you are wanting for online play is a low ping rate. Your bandwidth is irrelevant so long as you meet the minimums by a reasonable amount.

Ok thanks for all the help. Would you recommend I upgrade my speed or would that make a difference? I'm not sure what the minimum speed needed for online gaming is.

I would upgrade your internet speed. Your cutting it rather close to the point where if your operating system is updating or someone else is on the network you can lag out. Also remember that windows reserves 20% of your bandwidth for QoS purposes and it won't actually let you use everything unless you tweak some settings.

Windows does not reserve any bandwidth unless a program that supports QoS specifically requests it to do so, at which point, that program can reserve as much as 20% of the total bandwidth. Screwing with QoS settings can have adverse effects on programs that rely on it to function correctly such as VoIP. If a program has requested bandwidth to be reserved, but is not using that bandwidth, it's still available for 'best effort' traffic.

The minimum speed for online gaming depends on the game. I suspect 1 Mb/s down is probably overkill, if that's the only thing happening over your internet connection. As other devices, applications, and people use your internet connection, the need for bandwidth will go up according to what's being done online.

There are plenty of drivers and software packages that reserve that 20% all the time. Intel's wireless adapater drivers do it to ensure a stead wireless connection. Bumping the number down a bit wouldn't hurt anything.
