Need help deciding on new GPU, CPU (and PSU?)

Hello. I've just saved up approximately $1k and I'm going to upgrade my computer. I don't WANT to spend it all, but it's my current maximum.

First of all I want to know whether my parts really are worth upgrading. Comparisons seem to not make that huge a difference, but honestly, when I can't even get 60 fps in World of Warcraft on max graphics it's either something wrong with my components or the difference is larger than it seems.

I currently have an AMD 7950, an i5 2500K (not overclocked, and my computer keeps running into issues when I do it now, probably rather old. Have the H100i cooler connected) and a (terrible) CX600w. 5 year old PSU I'd say.

My questions to you are;

1. 970 vs 980. I'd like to avoid the big price of the 980 unless it's a huge difference. Considering getting 970 in SLI, just not right now. I want to overclock it as much as possible, while retaining stable and it not dying within a short time-span.

2. i5 4690K. I will be overclocking it. Have never done so successfully before, but I'll figure it out! Is it a good CPU for overclocking, and will it make a huge difference from a stock i5 2500K? And will my 1-2 year old H100i cooler be compatible / capable of keeping it cool?

3. My PSU is very old, and I'm not certain whether or not it's got a long life-span left, or if it is even performing well anymore. Will most likely have to be replaced soon either way, but how much power should I aim for? Will an, for instance, AX 750W be capable of running my system? Especially 970s in SLI?

4. I have a ASUS Z77 Deluxe motherboard, 2 years old I believe. Don't want to buy a new one if I don't have to. How will it perform with 970s in SLI / 980? How capable is it really of overclocking my CPU / GPU?

A lot of questions, I know, but any help is appreciated! Thanks!

@BigBadBeef

Where can I find your build? I'd appreciate some answers to how much of a difference new vs old makes, overclocking capabilities etc. I'm not buying a new computer, I'm upgrading 2-4 parts depending on requirement. Already have everything else upgraded and doing fine!

1. Personally i'd go with the GTX 970 as it's more cost effective & your talking about a 10% performance difference. If money was not an issue, sure, go 980. It's a very similar argument from previous generations GTX 6/770 & GTX 6/780

2. The i5-2500k is still a good processor, they haven't made huge bounds. So why not overclock it instead of upgrading just yet ? The i5 4690K will be a small upgrade. (I still have an i5 760 & waiting for the ever delayed Skylake :( ). Yes, the H100i will support the 4690K's LGA 1150 socket.

3. GeForce GTX 970 or 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 700~800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

As you intend to overclock, i would get an 850W PSU. Often you will find the price difference between 750-850 isn't that big, so why not. Judging by your budget, something from Tier 1 would be excellent.

The Power Supply Unit tier list:

4. Not an overclocker, but i don't see why it wouldn't perform well. With 2 cards the PCI-E x16 slots will run at dual x8, so that's pretty good. These level of processors & motherboards are fine with 2 cards, it's only when you want to run 3 or more, then you would consider the extremely expensive Intel setups.

p.s BigBadBeef's PC spec is in his signature, below his post in the bottom right hand corner. Here:

Antec VSK 4000 || Asus H97 Plus || Xeon E5-1241v3 || Cruicial memory 16GB 1600MHz || Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X OC || WD Black 2TB

@Scampi

Found that I had misread the specs on the Z77, apparently it has a 1155 socket and the 4690K requires a 1150 socket, so I'll have to upgrade to a Z97 Pro most likely.

2. Unfortunately it seems I'm unable to overclock it. Either that or I'm doing something severely wrong. Whenever I've tried to overclock it my system becomes unstable, even when I overclock it to a measly 3.8-3.9ghz. It might just be me doing something wrong. Could you link me a guide of sort that you approve of, that will explain everything thoroughly? The ones I've found haven't really helped.

EDIT: Do you know of any alternatives to the 4690K that have a 1155 socket? I'd prefer not to replace my mobo as of now if possible.

I was about to e-mail you a slap when I noticed your signature. No wonder it got tiring after the 50th time.

Yeah, Haswell (i5 4690K) is LGA 1150 so you'd need a new motherboard. Only Ivy Bridge uses LGA 1155 as well ( i5 3570k), but that's Intel's processor that came out after your Sandy Bridge (i5 2500k) & so it would be even less of of an improvement.

I'm not an overclocker unfortunately, but there is an overclocking section on Toms. I'd recommend asking in there.
