Solution

Asus Gene

Case Slot Opening ======= PCI-E 3.0 x 16 slot
Case Slot Opening ======= Nothing
Case Slot Opening ======= PCI-E 3.0 x 16 slot
Case Slot Opening ======= Other type of MoBo slot (blocked if 980 GFX card uses)

If that didn't answer, below will answer both questions

¿will they have enough air to keep the cards cold?

Asus Gene

Case Slot Opening ======= Card No. 1
Case Slot Opening ======= Card No. 1
Case Slot Opening ======= Card No. 2
Case Slot Opening ======= Card No. 2

The top card has limited availability to fresh air intake....I always look for MoBos like this when doing SLI

No I did not say that the 980 needs two slots

You asked if the SLI setup will fit in your MoBo and for that to happen, you need two card slots. I said that your MoBo has the needed two [PCI-E 3.0 x 16] slots

I think you're confusing case slot spaces with PCI-E 3.0 x 16 slots

The two PCI-E 3.0 x 16 (red) slots are spaced two case slots apart.

Many manufacturers like to place other types of slots between these slots but as you can see in the above pic, Asus did not do that with the Gene.

You will see that below the 2nd PCI-E 3.0 x 16 slot, there is a PCI-E x 4 slot. You will not be able to use this.

Excellent work mate.
One more question because i did not quite get all of it ... ¿will both cards fit in this mobo? ...
¿will they have enough air to keep the cards cold?

The 9xx series is very efficient and while I'd be concerned with older series cards which reached 80C +, the 9xx series typically runs in the mid 60s. OTOH, the Asus runs hotter than most due to component selection and, as I recall, they left the VRMs, MOFSETs, to their own devices so to speak without any thermal pads or other assistance other than the blow by from the shroud fans.

If you have issues, you can always add water blocks.
