Greetings people!

I bought a Samsung laptop about half-a-year ago for about $850. The specs are as follows:

Intel Core i5-3230M 2.60GHz
8 GB RAM
64-bit Windows 8.1
GeForce 710M (plus an integrated GPU probably not worth mentioning)

When I got it it was running perfectly. Diablo III and other new games were running very smoothly, and I had no problem running multiple programs at the same time.

Some time ago the (excuse the language) damn Play store FORCED ME to update to Windows 8.1, after declining over and over again, knowing I wouldn't like the new special effects (I already dislike Windows 8 compared to XP and 7).

After some time, the update was finished, and since then, my newly bought computer has been absolute crap, comparable to a 10 year-old computer, if not more.

Old games like Counter-Strike 1.6 are barely runnable, getting about 10 FPS running in to smoke granades. I tried Diablo II just now, and it also was unplayable because the mouse was just skipping around in a big lag-fest. As I said before, my computer 10 years ago ran both those games fantastic, so I find this absolutely insane.

The performance of the computer except gaming has gotten better after the latest two Windows Updates. However the games still lag like crazy, and the computer is still pretty slow.

Something worth mentioning I have had problems with 100% disk usage since the update to 8.1. It's much better since the last Windows Update I got a few days ago, but I feel something is wrong either with Windows 8.1 or my computer. Hopefully Microsoft are on it but I don't wanna sit here with my new computer barely being able to do anything on it.

Steps I've tried correcting the 100% disk usage problem (which seems better now):

- Increased the computer virtual memory
- Deactivated BITS, Superfetch and Windows Search (plus a few other ones just to test, but everyone of them are now activated again)
- Done the Windows Update troubleshooter, and updated to the latest versions
- Changed Antivirus from Avast to NOD32
- Updated various firmwares from the Samsung program (my computer is Samsung branded)
- Updated my graphics card drivers

By the way, none of the above tips helped with the gaming performance when I had the disk usage problem.

Do you guys have any idea what could be the issue here? I doubt the hardware is faulty since the problems started the moment I updated to 8.1.

And help would be immensly appreciated.

Thanks.

What more you can do is

- Update your Nvidia driver.
- Since the Nvidia started using their Optimus technology, sometimes the default GPU for applications is the integrated Intel one not the discrete Nvidia GPU. You can check that in your 3d settings in the Nvidia control panel for any particular game. If your game is not their , you can add the .exe file and set default the GPU to the Nvidia one.
- I just know what issue you'd be facing with Counter Strike, if you want to particularly resolve that you can follow the steps

I know its a late reply but better late than never.

Nope, I know that would probably take care of the issue, but it's just too much of a hassle. I didn't get a CD with the computer either, and making a back-up of all my programs, pictures and music would take forever.

If there's no solution at all, I guess this is what I have to do, but I still have hopes something can be done in this stage. The problems lies somewhere and it must be fixable (I hope, haha).

hummm It's very hard to say. it could be a malware or a virus. Do you download a lot of crap?

I guess at this point a clean install would be the way to go.... Backup your files and reinstall your softwares and games. You will be happy you did after.

Nope. I don't download any crap and watch after my computer like a blood hound. No viruses and no ad-ware. I'm 100% sure it's the 8.1 install. I noticed right after the install even the mouse settings were different from what I had on 8.0. Even the configurations on the games I played had resetted themselves.

Yeah, a clean install I guess is the option. It sucks though... I will watch the thread and look for some other tips though.
