Safety of using a ps3 controller with pc

Hi, My father is a bit tech old, and when I asked him if I could get a usb ps3 controller to use for games, he told me to find an article saying that it's safe. All I need to know is if using a USB ps3 controller will put my computer at risk at all. If it helps, I'm using a Mac OSX that is fully up to date.

It's safe, though an XBOX 360 controller would be more compatible likely.

It's not like the controller can even have a virus on it so what could even be harmful?
