980s are overpriced, especially compared with 970s.
SLI 970s are $100 more than a single 980 and destroy it: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_970_SLI/20.html
On top of that, SLI 980s cost more than $1000, which is too much. By the time you want to get a second one, there's already going to be a new card out. I think SLI 970s is the way to go.

If you had a marginally better GPU than the 980 that cost $3000 would you still go for that because it's "the best"?
We need to have in account the price to performance relation.
