Why can't my computer handle certain games well?

So, as the title says, I get FPS lag when I run some games I should be able to run seamlessly.
I've run pretty high end games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 3, Tomb Raider, and many other on high settings. However, there are certain games my computer can't play perfectly on even standard settings. Games such as Vindictus, Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, and many more. The games I've had these problems with are online games but not all online games lag like this. Tera Rising is a pretty demanding online game and I have had virtually no lag on it. I can't seem to figure it out.
I have been trying to play FF14 with a friend and the FPS lag is becoming annoying.

I don't think it's latency issues. It says that I have excellent connection and my internet has always been very good (Verizon Fios). I very rarely have any lag issues on other online games (League of Legends, Dota 2, etc.) so I don't think it could be that.... I could be wrong, though. Also, internet lag and FPS lag are two different things aren't they? I've had ping issues in games before and it always looked very different from FPS lag.

Lag and fps are different, but can cause the same effect depending on how the game handles certain instructions. Games like assassins creed unity and star craft 2 while in matchmaking mode both suffered from what seemed to be performance issues due to broken online functionality running in the background. But we will need your specs to help you further

Oh, specs...
i5-4570 3.2 GHz Quad core cpu
samsung 840 Pro series 128 gb solid state drive
Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3gb gpu?
XFX 550W bronze certified ATX PSU

I can't recall what the memory is but it was 2 x 4gb memory sticks. I'll have to check and update.
As for the GPU, I can't remember the exact one.
