To clear your doubt i Will say that
It depends on mobo
iF your mobo has (check GPU slot if it is) PCI Express (most common type of GPU slot.)
and if r9 290x will have that slot too.
Otherwise it won't.
I'd say better go with a GTX 970 or GTX 980 because they are new, more energy efficient and more powerful.
