As the title says...
My opinion:
AMD: best value/performance
Nvidia: Reliable
i5 4690
ASUS h97-plus
Current monitor 1440x900 19"
Most playing racing games...

R9 270X can handle 1080p aswell, GTX760 is a tad faster (maybe like 5% or so) but nothing noticeable. On both cards you might need to drop down a setting or two on the latest games. Which ever card you can get a better deal on and suits your budget should be fine.

AMD Radeon HD 280 or 280X (or 270X, seems the prices in euros have gone up), you propably won't find any Geforce GTX 960 yet at that price point. Radeon HD 270X should propably be enough for your resolution anyway running all at max atleast in current games.
