For the time being, at least, I've given up trying to build my machine based on a THIN mini-ITX board, as there are none available with an M.2 slot. So I'm going with a Mini-ITX board. The one I like is the Asus Maximus VII Impact. It has both an M.2 slot and RAMDisk.

The M.2 Slot will enable me to use a 128GB Samsung XP941 which is 4x faster than existing SSD's. It will enable me to load the whole of an SQL Server Database into main memory in a matter of minutes. RAMDisk will enable me to keep it in RAM until the application closes. For as fast as the XP941 is, it is still 20x slower than RAM.

Since SQL Server automatically makes use of hyper threading, I'll use an i7 with 16GB of RAM to allow for Database growth

Thanks for bringing this motherboard to my attention. Looks like I can go thin after all.
