Minecraft suddenly being really slow

I updated my laptop from windows 8 to the newest one the other day and everything works fine except minecraft. I can open it perfectly normally like before but as soon as I get onto the initial menu it goes very laggy and the landscape that moves in the background does not move smoothly like it used to. This results in me having to hover over the selection buttons for a few seconds before clicking on them. When i am in game, it is much slower than it was before even though i have my render distance on the lowest setting and have upgraded my java to 64 bit. Don't know how to fix this, does anyone know how to?

To add to what Vembutech has said make sure that you laptop can actually meet the requirements of the game. If you don't have enough ram then it can be an issue as this game can take up a lot of ram.
