Windows 7 will not boot. YoYo/Y8Y8/y∞y∞

I recently rebuilt my machine and installed Win 7 on a new SSD.

Everything was fine for about a week, but then the machine started crashing after about 15min from starting up. I would get a either a "disk read error" or "Bootmgr missing " error, so I ran startup repair off the Win disk and could boot again, but still would crash after 15 min or so.

Next I ran chkdsk, which found/fixed a few filesystem errors, allowing me to boot into windows. Of course, it still crashed after 10 -15 minutes.

Now though when I try to boot, I see:

Y∞Y∞

And nothing else onscreen. Is this a boot sector virus? If so how do I remove it?

I have Avast antivirus on the machine, and don't recall visiting any shady websites. The last program I installed before the crashes was (if I recall correctly) Adobe reader.

Any help would be appreciated.

My system:
Win 7 64 bit
Samsung 250gb evo SSD
Asus Sabertooth Mk2
i5-4690k
2x Nvidia GTX 460 1GB
8gb gskill ram
4 750Gb HDD's

"YooYoo" is a boot sector virus, which is why your machine won't boot, let alone allow Windows to start.

Pretty much the only way to remove such a virus is by low-level formatting the hard drive, a regular format won't shift it.
You should be able to find low-level formatting utility on the hard drive manufacturer's website, in the support section.
You'll need a low-level formatting utility which can be booted from a CD.

Thanks for the reply; I assume I should format just the boot drive and not every drive, correct?

Do you know if it is possible to save any data (photos, etc) from the drive, or will I just have to wipe everything? I've seen some people boot with a linux disk and move data of the infected drive.

Thanks again.
