Question about overclocking?

Greetings all!

I just received my Strix 970 yesterday and have been curious about overclocking it. I've wanted to try to reach the settings guru3d had when they did their OC review, but was put off by the idea of changing the core voltage. Which, I admittedly don't know much about. They state:

"Temp Target 80 Degrees C
GPU clock +150 MHz
Power limiter 120%
Mem clock +450 MHz
Volatge + 37 Mv
FAN RPM 50% (remains silent)"

As I stated, I don't know much about voltage. I was always told to leave the voltage alone if I don't know what I'm doing, so I figured I'd ask you :D. Specs:

i5 3470
corsair vengeance 8gb
msi z-77 mobo
SeaSonic 620w psu
Seagate barracuda 1TB

My concern isn't how to do it, it's pretty straightforward, but is it safe with my setup?

Thanks in advance!

Well, every GPU is different in how far it'll OC. Instead of copying settings, try overclocking from the very start. Core first, then memory. See where that'll get you.

Those temps are excellent, I can tell you that. The memory OC might be holding you back, my 980 will only do 3856MHz and a lot of other people don't get to 7.9-8GHz effective either. Again, only way to find out properly is to start from the beginning.

It's pretty much impossible to damage a GPU through software overclocking these days. You can't give it a damaging amount of voltage, and the card will throttle or shut down to prevent heat damage. You don't want to have this happen constantly ofcourse, but killing a card by just messing with it for a bit is really damn hard these days.

That said, adjust your fan curve to keep temps below 80C and make sure your PSU can handle the increased power draw and you'll be absolutely fine. Even maxing out the voltage slider won't hurt your card in that case. Less voltage is always better though, so I'd try getting as big an OC as possible without touching voltage first, mainly because increased voltage will get the card to that 120% TDP quite quickly, causing throttling.

Hmmm. Ok!

Well, I tried copying what guru3d had. However, it doesn't seem like it's keeping? I changed it in MSI Afterburner, settings exactly the same as theirs and ran Kombuster.

Stress test "Furry and Tessy Test (GL4) @ 1080p results:

About 1300 core clock and 3953 mem. Voltage is roughly 1.07-1.10 with the temps staying around 53 at 80% load. TPD is at 115-118% however. Thoughts on this?
