What is a motherboard standoff screw?

What does it look like? Whats the purpose? Case: Corsair Cabide Spec 01 Mobo: MSI z87m mobo Also, Do you have to screw in all mobo screws to be safe? If not, what is the minimum?

Motherboard standoff screw:

It's purpose is to prevent a short circuit between the soldering on the underside of the motherboard and the motherboard tray within the case. Yes, they are required, but you do not need to use them all (though there's no reason not to). I would put the minimum at three.
